“School wasn’t like this in my day”

This phrase has always struck me as bizarre. We expect our doctors, mechanics, hairdressers lawyers and pilots to keep pace with technological advances and shifts in wider society to stay relevant.

When it comes to schools the reverse is true.

People expect classrooms to be the same as when they went to school and are surprised when it is not. Often the changes non-eduactors are most interested in are surface features, children using computers, lack of rows of desks.

I was inspired by Sir Ken Robinson’s seminal TED talk and fellow Coetailer Reid Wilson’s profile of a modern teacher to create an infographic to explain how technology is influencing teaching and learning.
