The joy of concept based learning is being able to take multiple contexts and start looking for patterns.
A fashion unit looks at beauty over 100 years from different countries – Iran, Korea, USA, Germany. Some eras have more jewelry and make up, some countries split in two with opposite looks, a dramatic change in fashion in Iran from the 1970s to 1980s – something must have happened. From looking and noticing the children are able to make connections between beauty and what might be going in on the world –
- Prosperity – a lot of jewellery
- Communism – is plain and boring
- War – powerful poses
- Revolution – a lot of unnatural make up
We could have just learned facts and timelines, but by watching and looking for patterns the children make connections about social change and are curious to learn more.
Thanks for sharing! I am impressed with the interesting connections your students made. You may be interested in the “Dr. H Lynn Erickson and Dr. Lois A. Lanning Certification Institute for Concept-based Curriculum and Instruction Trainers and Presenters”.
